What is Euthanasia?

Euthanasia is a humane and painless procedure performed to end a patient’s life in order to relieve them from unmanageable pain or suffering. Euthanasia is commonly performed at the point when a patient’s quality of life has significantly declined, and we have no ability to make them better.

Our Approach

If you think it may be time to say goodbye, we’re her to support and guide you. Book an appointment with one of our vets and together we will assess your pet’s health and quality of life. Once we have a full understanding of their individual situation, we can discuss all options, including euthanasia so you can make an informed decision on how you wish to proceed.

Once the decision has been made to put your pet to sleep, you will be guided through the process by your veterinary surgeon. If you have made your decision but wish to have a little more time with your loved one, just let your vet know. Provided they feel this would be ethical, euthanasia can be scheduled for another day. Additionally, home visit euthanasia may also be an option that can be discussed (please note, this is not an option if urgent euthanasia is necessary).

When the time comes, you may choose to be with your pet during and after the procedure or you may not wish to be present. There is no right or wrong decision. The choice is yours and whatever your choice we will ensure you and your pet are as comfortable as possible. Please rest assured that if you do feel it would be too difficult to be present, our wonderful team of nurses and patient care assistants will be there to provide lots of cuddles and treats to put your pet at ease.

Aftercare

Once your pet has been put to sleep, there are three options as to what can happen with their body.

The first option would be to take your pet home for burial. If this is something you would like to do, it helps to bring along a favourite blanket that we can wrap them up in for you.

The remaining options involve having your pet cremated. Most people choose to leave their pets with us and we will arrange transport to (and from if individually cremated) the pet crematorium. You can however transport your pet yourself if preferred and arrange cremation directly with the pet crematorium.

Our trusted partner for cremation services is Pet Cremation Services (PCS) whose crematorium is in Ayrshire. You can find more information about PCS and their Ayrshire crematorium here PCS Ayrshire Pet Crematorium, Irvine, Ayrshire.

PCS offer either communal or individual cremation options. Following communal cremation no ashes will be returned. With an individual cremation your pets’ ashes will be returned to you in a receptacle of your choosing. You can find a list of the available options here (PCS product info or their online shop?).
