To extract or not to extract – Part 1: Periodontal disease and stomatitis
Speaker: Piotr Godziebiewski

Veterinary dentistry has evolved significantly over the past three decades. From a time of limited awareness and inaction, the field has progressed through the recognition of advanced pathology and routine tooth extractions, to the current era—where dental and oral pathology in dogs and cats are being diagnosed earlier and more frequently than ever before.

As a result, treatment strategies beyond extraction are now increasingly considered, and extractions may not always be the most appropriate choice—whether in general practice or in a referral setting.

In this two-part lecture, we will briefly review the most common oral pathologies and discuss the decision-making process, focusing on available treatment options. We will also consider key variables such as the stage and extent of pathology, the patient’s age, and overall health status.

10:45 – 11:25

A case-based discussion in Orthopaedics – Part 1: Carpal joint lameness
Speaker: Stephen Clarke

The carpus is often an overlooked source of lameness in dogs. Changes may be subtle and difficult to detect, particularly following trauma. However, these injuries can significantly impact limb function, and in many cases, salvage surgery is required to restore pain-free forelimb function. Is radiography sufficient for diagnosis, or is advanced imaging such as CT always necessary?

Using case examples, Stephen will discuss various causes of carpal lameness, offering tips on clinical examination, diagnostic approaches, and management strategies including arthrodesis surgery and its outcome.

11:30 – 12:10

To extract or not to extract – Part 2: Dental trauma and tooth resorption
Speaker: Piotr Godziebiewski

12:20 – 1:15

LUNCH & Tour

1:15 – 1:55

Managing expectations – How I approach my dentistry discussion with my clients
Speaker: Piotr Godziebiewski

Many clients understand the importance of dental health in companion animals, and major aspects of oral hygiene are widely discussed in UK veterinary practices. However, the limitations faced by veterinary surgeons when assessing the mouths of beloved pets are often not fully appreciated.

Authoritative statements like “Well, he’s still eating, so he can’t be in pain,” are commonly heard in the consultation room, or indignant questions such as “Sorry, what—how many teeth do you need to extract?!” asked over the phone halfway through a routine “scale and polish” procedure, remain all too familiar.

In this lecture, Piotr will explore strategies for effective communication and building rapport with owners throughout all phases of oral assessment—from the consultation room to the dental theatre, including imaging techniques.

2:00 – 2:40

A case-based discussion in Orthopaedics – Part 2: Elbow dysplasia
Speaker: Lachlan Mukherjee

Diagnosing the cause of forelimb lameness in immature patients can be challenging, even at the best of times. In this presentation, Lachlan will walk you through the case of a 7-month-old Labrador presenting with a mild but progressive forelimb limp. What changes can we identify on radiographs? What are the treatment options? And perhaps most importantly—will anything we do actually make a difference in managing this potentially debilitating disease?

Everything you need to know about elbow dysplasia—in just 40 minutes!

2:45 – 3:30

Top tips for tooth extractions
Speaker: Piotr Godziebiewski

Those of us with enough experience will remember the bad old days—the struggle and stress of extracting teeth, whether it was the carnassial in that massive Rottweiler or a wobbly, loose canine in the rubbery mandible of a geriatric Yorkshire Terrier.

Fortunately, even small changes—such as choosing a different tool, applying a new mechanical principle, taking an additional radiograph, adjusting posture, or extending the incision—can lead to valuable insights. In this presentation, Piotr will share his top tips for making tooth extractions more efficient and far less stressful—reducing time spent in the dental suite and improving outcomes.
