10.00 – 10.40 Michael McCallum
Demystifying the Ophthalmic examination
It’s Monday morning, 11 am, and you are already running behind with consults. Your next appointment is a grumpy two-year-old Labrador with a “sore eye”. Armed with limited equipment and even less time, what’s your best plan of attack?
Small animal patients present with ocular complaints on a regular basis and knowing where to begin and how to proceed is an essential skill. In this lecture, Michael will discuss how to get the most from your ophthalmic consultation using the equipment you have available in practice, giving you the best chance of success.
10.45 – 11.25 Richard McCallum
Corneal ulceration- Look before you leap!
Corneal ulceration is a frequently encountered presentation in small animal patients and one that can often leave clinicians scratching their heads about the best course of action.
When should you consider debridement? When should you refer? Which eye drop should you try next?
In this lecture, Richard will cover how best to manage cases of non-healing corneal ulceration, becoming the “Ulcer Detective”. Taking a logical approach, he will discuss the most common causes of non-healing corneal ulcers in dogs and cats and show you how to manage them effectively.
11.30 – 12.10: Michael McCallum
Uveitis: Where do I start?
Inflammation within the eye can have many different presentations and causes, which may vary from patient to patient. Knowing where to start when presented with a suspected case of uveitis can be challenging. Do you start Maxitrol and book the patient in with a colleague next week, or follow the textbooks and order 20 different serology tests while keeping your fingers crossed that something flags?
In this lecture, Michael will provide a clear framework for approaching these cases, using case examples to highlight what to look out for and how best to manage what you find.
12.20 – 1.15
LUNCH
1.15 – 1.55 Richard McCallum
Glaucoma – How to handle the pressure
Faced with a red, enlarged, and cloudy eye, would you know what to do? Or does it send your blood pressure skywards faster than your patient’s intraocular pressure?
In this lecture, Richard will discuss the nature of glaucoma and how to identify the underlying cause. He will also cover the most appropriate management options, both in-house and those available at a referral centre — hopefully leaving you feeling calmer and more in control when managing such cases in the future.
2.00 – 2.40 Richard McCallum
Cataracts – Bringing clarity to your cases
Are you confident that you can differentiate nuclear sclerosis from cataracts?
Do you know what to do next if you diagnose cataracts? Are there other factors to consider?
In this lecture, Richard will discuss how to achieve the best clinical outcomes for your cataract patients, what to look for in each case, and when to refer.
Everything you need to know about cataracts in general practice — in just 40 minutes.
2.45 – 3.30: Michael McCallum
A case based discussion on small animal Ophthalmology
Using what we have learned today, Michael will guide you through a number of ophthalmic cases to help re-enforce your newfound knowledge, as well as offer a few final tips and tricks on how best to approach such patients.
