What is Euthanasia?
Euthanasia is a humane and painless procedure performed to relieve uncontrollable pain or suffering by ending a patient’s life. This procedure is typically considered when a patient’s quality of life has significantly declined, the prognosis is hopeless, and all treatment options have been exhausted. The procedure involves administering an injection of an overdose of anaesthetic, usually directly into the bloodstream. The patient quickly falls into a deep coma and does not regain consciousness. This process occurs within seconds and, while understandably emotional for the owner, is completely painless and dignified for the patient.
Our Approach
If you believe it may be time to say goodbye, we are here to support and guide you. Book an appointment with one of our vets, and together we will assess your pet’s health and quality of life. After gaining a full understanding of their individual situation, we will discuss all options, including euthanasia, to help you make an informed decision.
If the decision is made to proceed with euthanasia, your veterinary surgeon will guide you through the process. Should you wish to have more time with your pet after making this decision, please let us know. Provided that delaying the procedure does not significantly impact their well-being, we can schedule euthanasia for a later date. Additionally, we offer the option of a home visit for the procedure. If you would like to explore this option, we are always available to discuss it with you.
When the time comes, you may choose to be present with your pet during and after the procedure. If you prefer not to be present, that is entirely okay as well. Your vet and vet nurse will ensure the procedure is carried out with the utmost care and compassion, providing reassurance to your pet to help them feel at ease.
This decision is deeply personal, and whatever choice you make, we will ensure you and your pet are as comfortable as possible.
Afterwards
After your pet has been put to sleep, there are several options for their body. You may choose to take your pet home for burial in your garden. If this is something you wish to consider, bringing a favourite blanket to wrap your pet in can provide comfort. Alternatively, you can leave your pet with us, and we will arrange transportation to the pet crematorium. If you prefer, you may also transport your pet to the crematorium yourself to arrange cremation directly.
Our trusted partner for cremation services is Pet Cremation Services (PCS), with a crematorium located in Ayrshire. More information about PCS and their Ayrshire facility can be found here: PCS Ayrshire Pet Crematorium, Irvine, Ayrshire.
PCS offers both communal and individual cremation options. With communal cremation, your pet’s ashes will not be returned. Individual (or private) cremation ensures that only your pet’s ashes are returned to you in a receptacle of your choosing, such as a casket or container. This option also allows you to scatter your pet’s ashes if you wish. You can find a list of available options through PCS’s product information or online shop.
